ive been offered a driveless 360
would i be able to just take a flashed drive from a rrod'd console and do a straight swap or are they locked to the console theyre initially fitted to?
Re: ive been offered a driveless 360
If you have the key from the drive that was in the box originally (by that I mean the drive key that comes with the FW, which pairs the Motherboard and the drive) then yes, you can inject that key into the FW for the drive you are installing... If you don't have that key, then it's a waste of time trying to salvage it.
The only place you can get the key from is the original drive. Even if it's toast, you might be able to find someone to desolder and dump the chip on a programmer, but that might also cost you a touch.

And if at first you don't succeed..? Order the damn card!

Mirc is a place to chat, post up on the site for help!!!
Re: ive been offered a driveless 360
are the drives the same?
eg- both samsung ms28
if both drives are the same and u want to swap out your "well used", flashed drive, out for 1 with a rrod, you can just swap the boards in the drives themselves. all the key information and fw is stored on the board in the drive and is just a matter of opening it and removing the 4 plugs to pull it out. just be carefull with the delicate wires and the drive HAVE to be identical.

yep if the laser is the only problem then yes you can. ive done it on a hit drive so i guess it should be ok. if both are smmy 28's then you wont need to get the dump or the key just a simple swap of the pcb
