broken fan

Post by ryan6 »

iv been playing my xbox 360 for a year now with a broken fan and havent had a problem besides noise. now im ready to get it fixed to avoid ROD but dont know how.

i was going to order a talismoon fan, but when i tested my stock fans on a 9v source, they both worked fine. plug it into my 360 motherboard and only 1 fan works. the pins in the motherboard dont appear to be broken, but i dont have a multimeter to test the connection.

i figured that if one fan is getting power, then maybe i need to rig up a better connection to the motherboard. or, if the pins for that fan simply dont have any voltage, then ill have to find an alternate power source in the 360 and run it at a constant voltage (better than nothing). any ideas on how to fix this? iv searched for info on it, but it seems like this isnt a common problem.

It sounds as if only one set of power pins is providing power. You can't splice the two fans to one because they would draw to much power for one power channel to provide alone. You only choice would be to draw power from a different 5v power source. Only problem would be that the fans would now slow down or speed up, they would run at a constant speed at all times. You could also draw power from a 12v source as well, but again, they would run at a constant speed, but it would be much faster and louder on a 12v source. Other things to consider here is that they are saying it's possible to get banned from XBL because of a 12v fan mod. I don't know how true this is though.

yeah, im going to go ahead and solder it to a 5v source, dont want it too loud (12v is too much) b/c i watch movies on it and should be enough seeing that i havent had any problems with cooling so far.

any suggestions as to a good 5v source would be considered. i found some good information on voltages across the board, but some advice from previous experience would be great.

You should be able to use any 5v source that the information that you have turned up, but my advice is not to use anything that comes off the dvd drive power source, that can cause some problems.
