Just Want To Say Thanks

Post by TheJerit »

As the title mentions, I just wanted to give a big thank you to CoFree, Textbook, and all the others who have provided so much knowledge to this community and us noobs... ;) As evidenced by most of the threads you see when you pop in here or other areas in the forums, they are mainly questions and issues so I wanted my appreciation to be known.

I had heard about flashing the 360 a while back, but just wasn't sure I wanted to risk it plus I was afraid I would get in over my head. I am very computer literate, but this was uncharted territory for me. I had a feeling this weekend and stumbled upon this site by a youtube video from sccrbrandon4788. The tutorials and and textbooks guide for noobs made this so much more simple than I thought it would be. The hardest part which delayed me for a few hours was changing a setting for my via southbridge in the bios (didn't have it set as Raid, so Windows wouldn't properly recognize my sata controller  ). After figuring that out, it was a breeze and now my samsung drive has been flashed. Testied it out afterwards and it worked perfectly with my retail 360 games. Going to make a backup soon, but I have good confidence all should be OK. I was very fortunate in that I had a Samsung MS25 drive, via chipset already on my mobo, and of course, you guys. It didn't cost me a dime :D. Can't beat that.

Ok I'll shut up for now and I hope this is posted in the proper section. My advice for noobs getting into this; read, read, read. Start with Textbook's guide and then watch the tutorials here to see it actually being done by someone on video. Combining those things should cut out most uncertainties. And as always, you can ask in here and there are a lot of people that will be glad to help. Still got a lot to learn, but I'm glad I'm on the right track.

Thanks again.

the key is in your firmware that is in the backup folder.
if you saved the whole backup folder that is fine.

Thanks :)

Been tested it out this week and things have went as smooth as possible. I think the only thing I noticed was that my dvd drive kind of makes a very low/light almost grunt noise here and there, sometimes more frequent. I think its just the drive itself as I noticed it with normal games too. I chose to use the 5x firmware speed, but from I've read, its really just preference. I think its just probably normal dvd sounds that have been brought to my attention since I have really focused on it now. :D

yea i use 5x too cuz it's less noisy as the drive doesn't spin up like it does on 8x or 12x.

well that is a yes and no.
you need to keep in mind a stock drive will read at 12x unless it has a jard time reading the disc then it will step down to 8x or 5x. ;)

Most of us use the 12x. It does step down to the lower speeds if it has trouble reading. CoFree uses 12x exclusivly and so do I.

its not a big deal man.
a stock console comes running at 12x speed.if it is having trouble reading a disc it will step down in speed to 8x speed.
If it still cant read the disc it will step down again to 5x speed.it will slow all the way to 2x speed.

the thing is if you flash a console with 5x speed firmware it will only read at 5x or 2x speed.

most of us flash at 12x speed for two reasons.
1. we want the console to be as much like stock as it can be when we are on live. :?
2.we hate load times. :D
