If you have a dead or non working BluRay drive here is a tutorial to help you replace your BluRay drives lens youself from another working BluRay drive or just purchasing the entire part needed (kem-400aaa). Please note that if you have warranty or a store receipt return/call Sony and they should be able to do it for free. But if your out of warranty or dont have any on your PS3 (for any devilsh reason), you can easily fix your PS3. (Sony charges about $150 to do it).

1. Open the top cover of the PS3
(See viewtopic.php?f=104&t=3792&p=21172#p21172),
So that just the top is off, not the entire thing.
2. Pull out the power plug for the BluRay drive.
3. Carefully pull up the BluRay drive and unclip the data cable ribbon from PS3 drive.

4. Remove the two silver screws on top right and bottom right according to the picture (screwdriver is pointing at them)
5. Unsrew the 3 black screws to the left as well
6. Remove the top metal sheilding of the BluRay drive, exposing the guts.

7. Remove the top frame now that we are inside to reveal the laser (unscrew the screws)
Image

8.Once that is done you should be staring at the BluRay laser
Image

9. Remove the BluRay lens screws (Circled Red)
10. More screws to remove (screwdriver pointing)
11. Carefully disconnect Cables (Circled Green)
Image

12. There you go after removing all those screws the laser should easily come out, simply repeat the process for another working BluRay drive and extract its BluRay lens or just simply buy a replacement part (part # kem-400aaa) and insert it in the Bluray drive and start rescrewing

Hope this can help those unfortuante with a dead bluray drive and no warranty.

Its the same one laser unit for ALL PS3's it reads all formats just has different type of lasers Blue for BluRay things & Red for the rest.

Part No: PS3 LENS KES-400AAA [KES-400AAA]

Hope that helps you.

Where can I buy the kem-400aaa? On eBay some of them are from China and I don't want to wait that long or even trust if I get it on time. Also on some sites are on back order. I'm looking to get it any where in the States, not international. Thanks

What is the model number of your PS3? It should be on the back of the PS3 after the serial number - begins with CECH (example: CECHG01)

I bought mine at http://parts.consolerepairguy.com" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

The KES-400A laser is $71.95 and with the deck (KEM-400AAA) is $74.95. These are the brown clips ones as well (the white clip lasers have a much higher failure rate).

Most likely that is the laser you need, if you do need the other one, they sell the KEM-410ACA for $68.95.

Those are actually Canadian prices and they ship to Canada and the USA.

Anyway, thanks for the guide, I replaced mine using this tutorial and it's working great!

EDIT: OK I just noticed the last post was Feb. 23, 2009, but anyway it still applies - lots of lasers still failing out there I'm sure!
